Clean Living
When we think about healing, we often focus on food, movement, and mindset. But clean living is the other piece of the puzzle—because what we put on our bodies, breathe in, cook with, and live among matters just as much as what we eat.
After my diagnosis, I slowly began paying attention to the products and materials I used every day. Not from a place of fear, but from a place of power. Clean living isn’t about perfection. It’s a process. One small change at a time. And once you learn what to look for, it becomes second nature.
Here’s a snapshot of six key areas to start with. You can always expand from here. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is an amazing resource, and their app makes it easy to scan products on the go.
1. Household Cleaning
So many conventional cleaners are loaded with hormone-disrupting chemicals. Swapping them out is one of the easiest, highest-impact upgrades you can make.
What I use:
Branch Basics — The true definition of simplicity, they have one concentrate with endless uses: laundry, dishes, all-purpose, even hand soap. It works, smells clean, and won’t compromise your health.
2. Bath, Body & Makeup
Your skin is your largest organ—and it absorbs what you put on it. That’s why body products matter. I go by a simple rule: if I wouldn’t eat the ingredients, I don’t want them on my skin.
Favorites I trust:
-
Living Libations — Their “Best Skin Ever” oils are amazing.
-
The Detox Market — Carefully curated, high-performance, low-toxin beauty. I love May Lindstrom, De Mamiel, RMS, Odacité, Lily Lolo, and Leahlani.
-
The Body Deli – fresh from Palm Springs, their skincare is made with superfoods and ingredients so pure you could practically eat them.
3. Cookware & Kitchen Tools
You’ve probably heard of PFAS and PFOS—forever chemicals found in many nonstick pans. These chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption and cancer, and they leach into food when heated (especially if scratched).
Safer swaps I use:
-
Cookware: Scanpan, Caraway, Always Pan Titanium Pro, All-Clad Stainless Steel
-
Utensils: Ditch plastic spatulas and spoons. Stick with wood or high-heat-safe silicone.
4. Furniture & Decor
Think of your bed as your recharge station. Conventional mattresses and furniture often contain flame retardants, off-gassing chemicals, and synthetic materials. Over time, those add up.
What I love:
-
Avocado for organic mattresses, pillows, and sheets (their 600tc is the best).
-
Coyuchi for all things soft, stylish and toxin-free. I'm pretty much obsessed with everything they offer. Tip -- they have a 2nd home program for more affordable options!
-
7th Avenue for cleaner couches, we just invested in one and love it!
-
Quince for some budget-friendly organic cotton towels and bedding (be sure to filter by material).
5. Clothing
This one took time for me. I loved my soft SoCal staples from Vuori and Lululemon—but most are made of polyester. When you sweat, those synthetics can trap heat and leach microplastics into the skin. So I started slowly upgrading the essentials: workout wear, sleepwear, and underwear.
My go-to brands now:
-
Pact
-
Mate the Label
-
Skin Worldwide
-
Quince for organic bras, tanks, and basics
-
Felina Organic
-
Tasc
6. Water
Last, but certainly not least, clean water is just as important as clean food and clean air. For years I used an iSpring 7-stage RO filtration system under my sink which I think is a good budget option. I always add a few drops of Trace Minerals to bring back electrolytes and essential minerals that get stripped out during the filtering process. But just recently, I upgraded to an under sink Cloud RO after doing a lot of resesarch and reading NSF certification reports. So far, I'm really happy with it. I also invested in a whole-house filter. I chose the Radiant Life Series 4, which checked all my boxes: strong filtration, solid reputation, California-based, and fairly priced. It’s a big step, but one I feel is worth it — because every drop matters, from the glass you drink to the water you shower in. Learn more about the filter I use here.
Bonus: Sauna for Clean Living Detox Support
As you begin upgrading your environment, don’t forget the power of sweating it out. Regular infrared sauna sessions can be a gentle but effective way to support detoxification by encouraging your body to release stored toxins through the skin. I personally love Perspire Sauna Studio in Newport — it’s clean, super convenient, great customer service and they preheat the sauna so its hot enough to make you sweat the second you step in. Whether you’re supporting lymphatic flow, easing joint stiffness, or just giving your detox pathways some love, sauna is a great addition to your healing toolkit.
Clean living is about aligning your environment with your healing. Start where you are. Pick one swap and make it stick. Then another. Trust that these changes add up—just like your morning matcha or your afternoon walk.
